People who work irregular hours (such as night shifts) who suffer from excessive daytime drowsiness and sleep problems are said to have shift work sleep disorder (SWSD). Several drugs are often used to treat SWSD, including:
For SWSD, modafinil (such as Modalert 200) is one of the most often given drugs. It increases alertness and decreases drowsiness during work hours, especially for night shift workers, by boosting neurotransmitters in the brain.
Similar to modafinil but with a longer half-life, armodafinil (e.g., Artvigil) is used to enhance wakefulness in individuals with SWSD.
